We’re in a moment now where people want art created in the last few years, but that makes classic contemporary look like a great opportunity,” said private dealer Anthony Grant following Monday’s sale at Sotheby’s. “I bid on three things and only won one.” Mr. Grant lost out on paintings by Mr. Twombly and Sigmar Polke but won an untitled, $1.4 million Donald Judd.

A monumental work by Jean-Michel Basquiat, estimated to reap about $30 million at auction, is coming to Sotheby’s in May…
“It’s raw, and at the same time, it’s elegant,” said Anthony Grant, a New York-based art dealer. “Between the iconography, scale and material, it’s got everything.”

Among the most sought-after advisors of the time was Estelle Schwartz. Anthony Grant, a prominent figure in Sotheby’s contemporary art department during that period, remembers her influence: “She was the one who would tell people what to buy. She would tell them, 'This is what you should be looking at right now.’ They would hang on her every word. She probably placed the lion’s share of Basquiat works to collectors in the New York area.” p. 86 - 87
“One of the reasons we didn’t push his work into sales,” remembered Anthony Grant, the head of the Post-War and Contemporary department at Sotheby’s at the time, “was that there were no real buyers out there except for Jose Mugrabi, Peter Brant, and Enrico Navarra. They became very, very committed to Basquiat’s work when others wanted little to do with it.” p. 136

Anthony Grant, a private dealer in Manhattan and former Vice Chairman of Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s, saw this phenomenon in the past and present. “There is a mercantile attitude about older artists,” Grant said, as dealers look to sell and collectors seek to buy before their death takes place. “People say, ‘the artist is getting older, so I better get some of his work before he dies and the price goes up.”
